NDPERS Retirees to Experience Nearly a Million in Medicare Part D Premium Savings

Posted 9/07/18 (Fri)

The North Dakota Public Employees Retirement System (NDPERS) Board unanimously adopted the Medicare Part D – Prescription Drug Plan contract through Express Scripts Incorporated (ESI) that will generate over $950,000 in premium savings for the 2019 plan year. Approximately 8,860 members enrolled in this plan will benefit from this decision.

Scott Miller, recently appointed as NDPERS Executive Director, welcomed this win for retirees. "In a world of increased prescription drug costs, NDPERS retirees can see a 9.6% reduction in monthly premium whilst enjoying quality drug coverage". Changes aligned with guidance from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are part of the implementation effective January 1, 2019. However, this does not represent a change in plan design for these retirees. In addition to the CMS required changes, the plan will also include the Opioid Management Program as provided by ESI. The implementation of this program has a twofold purpose. "We aim to support national and state efforts geared towards avoiding opioid addiction and, at the same time, continue to generate cost savings that benefit our members," Miller added.

The Dakota Retiree Plan is bundled with the Medicare Part D – Prescription Drug Plan offered to NDPERS retirees. The $9.12 monthly savings for each retiree and spouse enrolled in the program represent over $100 in savings during the upcoming year. Individual notices regarding the decrease in premium will be mailed to NDPERS retirees in late November.
